This morning, I woke up, had a black espresso, fed myself and the baby, played with the baby, cleaned the house and completed a high intensity workout. I’ve got to say, sit-ups with the baby sitting on my tummy are hard work!
My daughter is now in bed napping and I have a window of 90-120 minutes to work on my business.
As I was going about my morning, I was thinking about what I’m most passionate about:
What does it take to reach our full potential; and sustain our results as an elite performer?
There are so many different factors that contribute to our performance in life; our environment, our support team, what we think, what we believe, how we take action and how we react to life’s circumstances.
Then, it occurred to me that while elite performance is made up of many different elements, there is one thing that it is not…
Elite performance is not about ‘looking good’.
As I write this article, I am sitting in my tracksuit pants and singlet, I still haven’t had a shower or brushed my hair. I am definitely not looking my ‘best’! And yet, as I reflect on my morning, I can own that I am an elite performer. Why?
I get up, I show up and I forward my game; every. single. day.
Do I make mistakes? Hell yes! Do I get triggered? Absolutely! Do I sometimes not follow through with what I say I’ll do? Even though I know better, the answer is, definitely. Do I always look like my profile picture? Mmmm, not even close.
The sooner we can give up the need to ‘look good’ to everyone else, to appear perfect, to seem like we’ve ‘got it all handled'; the sooner we can go about the business of being ourselves and completely accepting ourselves.
When we think about elite performance we can often get caught up in the results. The bigger bank balance, the smaller butt, the trophies in the display cabinet. However, what if elite performance has nothing to do with what we achieve and everything to do with who we are being in pursuit of those achievements?
Don’t get me wrong, the money, the body and the trophies are great. However, consistently landing our goals actually has very little to do with the goal. It has everything to do with who we have been in the pursuit of those goals.
Owning the good days and the bad days, being present, acknowledging the journey and fully accepting ourselves, no matter what; that is the elite part of the performance.
When we give up looking good and vulnerably share every aspect of our journey, warts and all; that is when the consistent and extraordinary results start to show up.
